discover the healing power of food
Melissa Mouton, MS, RDN, LD

Melissa is a holistic nutrition counselor, credentialed nationally as a Registered Dietitian and locally as a Texas State Licensed Dietitian, focusing on a whole-foods plant-based diet.

She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition, with a focus on  whole foods, at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington.

After completing her degree at Bastyr she then went on to complete a dietetic internship, approved by the American Dietetic Association, at the University of Washington.  Clinical training sites included University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance among others.

Before returning to her native Texas home, Melissa worked at the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, both in Seattle Washington, where she gained extensive experience working with cancer patients, especially breast and prostate cancer, and leukemia. Melissa has been in private practice since January 2006 focusing primarily on weight management, Cancer prevention, Cancer treatment support, and Cancer survivorship. Melissa also works with clients to prevent and reverse Heart disease and Diabetes using a plant-based diet.

In addition to her private practice in Austin, TX, Melissa is a Quality Assurance Nutrition Consultant with the Texas Department of State Health Services. She has experience teaching as an Adjunct instructor for Kaplan University and Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute, as well as experience as a Research Dietitian at The University of Texas at Austin. Melissa is a Certified PCRM Food For Life Cooking Class Instructor and provides online nutrition counseling services as a licensed provider for Real Living Nutrition Services®.

Melissa strongly believes our health is connected to the health of our environment.  Therefore, she practices and encourages sustainable living. Eating local and organic food is beneficial for our planet and our health. Melissa can guide you to healthful food choices that make sense for you and the environment.

Melissa is passionate about guiding others to develop a healthy relationship with food. She believes in providing a comforting, non-judgmental environment for a client to learn and make positive changes.  Based on her Holistic approach, she understands that weight issues are not always just about food.

Stress, emotions, and boredom often are associated with overeating. Processes such as off and on dieting can lead to eventual, increased weight gain (even though you may have lost some weight while on the diet). Melissa works with clients to help them become intuitive eaters, which allows them to move away from diets and achieve a natural and healthy weight.

Medications and underlying illness or nutrient deficiencies may also make losing weight difficult.  Melissa completes a full nutrition and health assessment using a whole person approach to nutrition care to help uncover any potential health issues and she refers to the appropriate health care providers as indicated.

Melissa considers the whole person - mind-body-spirit - when working with clients and collaborates with Naturopaths, counselors, and other holistic practitioners to ensure comprehensive care for each unique individual.
